I vividly remember how warm and welcoming Paul was in my first weeks at Jacksons. Paul is full of fun and laughter and brings so much joy to the team.
Being a local boy (Sennen) there isn’t anywhere west of Penzance that he doesn’t know, including the many people that live in the area! He has a warm personality and is able to make you feel at ease from the second you meet him.
Paul worked in the banking sector for many years which has given him a wealth of experience with a diverse range of clients. He leads when it comes to new processes and is a big team player.
He won’t mind me telling you that he can also be a little clumsy and has the team rolling with laughter most lunchtimes with a tale from the weekend or previous evening! He is the Paul Hollywood of our annual bake-off and would genuinely do anything for anybody if he thought he could help.
Anyway, time to hear from the man himself. Over to you Paul!
Why finance? Tell us a little of your journey to Jacksons.
Back in 1987 I left secondary school and took a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) in Lloyds Bank for six weeks before securing a full-time position with Midland Bank (now HSBC). I worked my way up the ladder, as they say, starting by making teas and coffees for the branch, usually around twenty back in the day. Carrying that tray down a flight of stairs was a challenge!
After spending many years in branch banking, I moved over to Wealth Management undertaking various exams over the years until 2012 when I completed my qualifications.
What do you love most about working with the team at JMFP (Jacksons: Meaningful Financial Planning)?
I call JMFP my ‘work family’ and being part of an amazing team and knowing that I have 100% support from the Senior Leadership Team is by far the best part of working here.
Days are full and having the ability to take some time out (a funny story or two maybe) certainly makes the days enjoyable.
What do you love about your role the most?
Other than working with a great team, it has to be job satisfaction in helping my clients and building financial relationships with them to help them along their journey.
I view it as vitally important to treat clients how I would like to be treated and this analogy has been welcomed by clients and served them and me well over the years.
How have you adapted to the changes at Jacksons?
It is certainly never dull here… and there have been a lot of changes (for the better of course).
I am a creature of habit/routine and I have learned over the years not to fear change. You are never too old to learn – embrace the change!
What would a typical weekend at home look like?
So, with a wife (Leanne) that works and two children in education, the weekend tends to be a catch up on chores that I didn’t get to on the Friday! Although, I have to say the list is getting less!
We have a cavapoo dog named Maple and taking her for a walk is one of the best things; enjoying the various walks we have on our doorstep. I keep busy being taxi-service to the children and manicuring (cutting) the lawn and tidying the borders in the garden. (I have a slight obsession with lawn stripes!)
The weekend will also include catching up with family and friends and not to forget enjoying some nice food. I’m a dab hand at a traybake!
Where is your favourite place to visit in Cornwall?
Sennen of course is a special place to visit, although I have not lived there for nearly 30 years it always feels like home when I return for a walk or a beach day, providing I do not have to climb that hill.
One of the perks when my parents lived there was a phone call and we had our very own taxi ride up the hill; not sure Mum and Dad were thrilled that their car was full of sand after, mind!
What are you looking forward to the most in the coming 12 months at Jacksons?
It has to be the move to the new office, although the team here are already thinking about where am I going to locate myself as apparently, I talk loudly! Think I may end up in one of the soundproof booths permanently before being pushed into the harbour!
Okay, back to me (Sharon). Paul is not joking when he says he might become a permanent resident in the soundproof booth, all said with love of course!
It’s an absolute pleasure having someone with so much experience and motivation in the team. We are big advocates of lifting each other up and inspiring others here at Jacksons and Paul does both of those in bucketfuls. In Cornish terms, ‘he is some boy!’
